Before we talk

How to get ready for your consultation

There is no homework and no paperwork. Most people arrive with nothing but their questions, and that works fine. If you would like to make the time count, here is what helps — and what you will never be asked for up front.

Worth having handy

Ballparks beat exact figures. Nothing here needs to be looked up or printed.

A rough sense of who depends on your income

A spouse, kids, a parent you help, a business partner. You do not need names or numbers — just the picture.

Any coverage you already have

Through work or bought on your own. The summary page of the policy is plenty; the full contract is not needed. "I think I have something through work" is a fine answer.

Roughly what is left on your mortgage

A round number is enough. No statements, no account numbers — the balance in your head is the right level of detail.

What you are hoping the money would do

Pay off the house, replace income for a while, cover final expenses, leave something behind, or set up carrier-backed retirement income designed to last for life. "Not sure yet" is genuinely a valid starting point.

Your timeline

Deciding soon, sometime this year, or just gathering information. This changes the pace of the conversation, not the quality of it.

Your questions, written down

The single thing that makes these calls better. Write them before the call and ask them all — nothing is too basic, and the ones you feel silly asking are usually the important ones.

What you will never be asked for up front

The form on this site collects none of the following:

  • Your Social Security number
  • Your exact date of birth — an age range is all the form ever asks
  • Account numbers, exact balances, or account statements
  • Medical records or a doctor’s note
  • Any payment information

Health does come up once you are talking to a licensed agent — what coverage costs depends on your age and health, so those questions are part of building your illustration and completing an application. They are handled in conversation or on the application with a licensed agent, never through a form on this website.

What the conversation looks like

1

You talk, Ken listens

The first part is your situation in your own words — who you are covering for, what worries you, what you already have in place. There is no script to get through.

2

He explains the options that fit

Plain English, in terms of what each one actually does for your household. Where a product is not a fit, you will be told that too.

3

You get a personalized illustration

A written breakdown built around your numbers, prepared through the licensed process. Because pricing depends on your age and health, that is where a licensed agent asks health questions — in conversation or on the application, never through a web form. Nothing has to be decided on the call, and nothing has to be signed on the call.

4

You take it away and think

You keep the illustration. If you want to move forward, the application comes after, and it may ask more detailed health questions as part of underwriting — handled with a licensed agent through secure channels.

This page is educational and logistical only — it is not a quote, an offer, or a recommendation, and it shows no rates or prices. Your own numbers require an application and underwriting, and any guarantees are backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurance company.
